Oh, I think so. Even Hitchcock's say its blood noisy.

If you want a high level exhaust that won't hack off the neighbours get the Woodsman system. The silencer is the Indian shortie referred to earlier.

The example of our hosts' Goldie loudener which i bought made no effort to recreate the BSA internal design with the offset baffles. Not that I'm accusing the BSA design of being quiet, but it must make some difference.

The 50s is an english version of the indian 'shorty' - there are a couple of different 50s depending on bike year and pipe diameter.

The 50s (with baffle) tends to cause big cheesy grins and compliments from neighbours. Seriously, I ridden many bikes but this one turns the most heads. I dunno if that's good or bad. You don't need ear plugs, most of the time it is reasonably quiet - until you open it up, then you hear it and that is part of the fun. It's not so much the volume but the note (timbre) it makes.

Car drivers certainly pay more attention if you're splitting lanes of stationary cages (assisted but some necessary double de-clutching) and ease over whereas the silent swishing noise of a modern bike gets ignored.

That should read, "... unnecessary double de-clutching" but my spelling chequer though otherwise.

I made a vid on a GoPro but the mic is poor, plus it's up the front of the bike whereas the exhaust is at the other end. I made a better sound recording by dropping a PCM recorder into the pannier but have no way of posting that here.

Anyway, here's the vid, or a link.

Thanks, guys for this latest advice.much apreciated.looks like my preference is coming down to the 50s system or the woodsman. Anyone know how the sound of these compare? Are they both nicely un -restricted?

Ian C - you have an older model than me so I'm not sure the pipe diameter is the same but the Woodsman looks like a 50's bottle so they should sound the same, yes they're "less restricted" with a removable baffle but don't do that, you can adjust its fins.

I once burnt my leg on a high level exhaust, so personally I hate them; it's not sitting on them that's the problem, it's getting off. Unless you do some serious off-roading, they're a bit of a fashion statement as a low level will clear the odd stump; I used to marshal a few trial events back when. Go on YouTube and watch the indians playing?

Thanks jefrs for the advice about the high pipe. I hadn't thought of that. You guessed right, for me it was about "the look". I'm not planning to go off road so don't NEED a high pipe.
