Jefrs, there is a reason for being more comfortable with a right foot gear change. It used to be called Cross Co-ordination but I've no idea what the term is now. The principle is that your brain is using both sides to control limbs on both sides of your body, ie clutch left hand/gear change right foot. Likewise right hand brake/left foot brake. The human brain is only capable of about 5 actions at one time (adding a 6th means something else isn't being done) so I suppose it's a way of spreading the load. No doubt google will have its own opinion. There is no physical, logical or rational reason for the layout on modern motorcycles other than following trend and the demands of US legislation.

I'm sure I saw some photos of a French enthusiast's visit to the factory in 2010 with classic 350 4 speed Bullets still in production alongside the UCE models, but those must have been the very last. A.

Adrian, they continued in production but, due to euro emission legislation, were no longer imported.

That's it A-L-Eddie :) I don't get merikan legislation, I drive an automatic car and left-foot (or both feet) brake like what they do, I'll left-foot brake a manual too sometimes. Only time I've had a problem recently was going a quick halt on the bike to avoid a cage and stamped on the gear lever, ouch! It's hardwired now.

Nettshubby - an idea but I believe they're rear-sets to does-my-back CGT position, I'd be interested in Woodsman position at the swinging arm but the exhaust and centre stand are in the way. There's plenty of space over the engine for rods and cable. I shall make enquires :)
