It was dead dodgy out, see separate post.
There are many cars with automatic headlamps now. the drivers don't even know how to switch them on manually, especially around Sevenoaks area. It was light, but quick murky fog. First right turn I saw the lights of a truck some way away and started to turn. halfway around i saw the small van in front of that and a red car in front of the van, both with no lights on at all! My safety margin was almost nil.
It wasn't like I was in a hurry. I had left early, had time to chug nicely and to do correct checks at junctions, but when you see a pair of headlamps in the fog, it is near impossible to see the two vehicles in front with NO light s on. It was an epidemic, I passed 4 vehicles in a row coming the other way and none of them had any lights on. If only I had remembered to bring the helmet mount for my cam, you could all share my disbelief as well.
One of the main topics for bikers stopping at the Hollyville was about the amount of drivers with no lights in the fog. most agreed that it was between a third to a half.
Maybe having automatic headlamps and just relying on them to come on when they should, is very dangerous on a day with thick fog, but enough daylight to stop the headlamp from coming on.
Rant-ity-rant!
