Hi all,

I need to check my front brake shoes and I am concerned about getting the nut off. Its really thin and in a recess which to me looks like its difficult to undo…….anyone got any tips or has no one ever had trouble?

cheers in advance

I grip the opposite side of the spindle in the vice so the wheel is horizontal. I've always managed with a ring spanner in this position. I believe it's 1" from memory.

As needs must, I tapped mine round with a drift... marked it slightly, so while it was off I carefully cleaned it up with a file until is was the size of the box spanner that comes in the toolkit. No need to resort to butchery in future! Of course I should have waited until I could find a suitable box spanner - but you know how it is...

oh 1"!

sods law, I haven't got one, is it better to try to find a box spanner or get a combination spanner? I don't want to risk using an adjustable.

Mine is also 1". I have a 1" box spanner which is perfect for the job. Get one : )

Obviously, use soft jaws in the vice to hold the spindle, not worth rushing it...

I think it would possibly work, but depends which nut spins first, or you could hold the speedo assembly by hand.

If the "wrong" bit turns, then Carefully holding the spindle, soft jaws, can be the next step. -C

Standard thread. Sometimes holding the brake on with a ring spanner on one of the lever nuts is enough to hold centre whilst the centre nut is loosened.....
