Andy, do you know what the registration number was? That will help answer the question!

It can be done in theory, but will it be worth the effort? The first step will be to find out if the local DVLA Office kept the old Registration books (Many threw them out when things became computerised). If the books had been kept. Then it's a case of getting some poor sap to search through the books looking for the frame number and the Registration logged against it (The entries will be in number plate order). Somehow. I don't think this is going to happen (Unless you offer to go there and search the books yourself).

Sorry Netts, you are quite right. I was trying to keep the reply short as I was busy and failed to think my answer through! The reason I asked for the reg number is that if it was a Greater London area registration (and Gander and Gray were in Romford E12,) all London registration documents were destroyed on the instructions of the (then) DVLC in the early 80s. They ordered all local authorities who had previously been keeping the records before the set-up of the central computerised system at the DVLC to destroy their records, an act of vandalism in the opinion of many and certainly a rash decision for them as many, many queries have come back to haunt them since. Some LAs didn't do as instructed and have kept their material in their Archives and some passed them on to a Charity, The Kithead Trust (http://www.kitheadtrust.org.uk/vehicle_records_5.html) where you can search these records. Helpfully their website also lists remaining archived material still in Local Authority care. However, apart from curiosity there is little point in finding a vehicle in registration documents any more as these records rarely have an engine and frame number against them and without this VOSA/DVLA will not re-issue an old number, the rules having recently been tightened up. An old tax disc is no longer enough either unfortunately. (An old logbook will still work though.) This is a shame as I have previously reclaimed 2 numbers on Enfields. That's why my reply was so short!

Don't give up on the original registration. Depending on where you live and where the machine was first supplied, the records may still exist. I know, as I managed to trace the original reg for my 1956 Triupmh Speed Twin. The club registrar used the frame number to identify which retailer was supplied with the bike and when. I then visited the local records office, in Wakefield for West Yorkshire, and searched through the reg numbers issued to the retailer for the relevent dates and found the record card with the original engine, frame number, model and first owner. Armed with certified copies, the club registrar was able to obtain the original reg. only wrinkle being that the bike was orininally a Tiger 110 and, in it's life, has morphed into a Speed Twin! Something to explain if I ever sell it.
Have a word with the club registrar.
