My 2001 500 was leaking lots of oil from distributor after it was knocked over by a car at the parking lot. I really don't have any mechanics who can work on bullet around my area so I am planning to change the seal and gasket by myself. I know I need to re adjust the ignition timings after replacing gasket. I also do not have distributor pinion extractor is there any other tool I can use to remove the distributor pinion? Any other suggestion on this? I have never opened the timing chest before and little worried about messing up something else.

Hi if the bike fell onto the primery drive side the timing case is 3/4 full of oil which might have run down the dizzy shaft, I would clean out dizzy houseing on points side and see how things go . Gasket only seals houseing to timing case with a bit of careful jiggling seal can be replaced from points end and tapped into place with a suitable drift. Good luck.

Yes, you say "gasket", but do you mean seal? Is the oil coming out past the points, or between timing case amd distrib mounting? If it's from the points, as said above that can be replaced in situ, no need to remove distributer. I also would suggest cleaning it up and running it for a while, it may stop after a bit, as said, it's probably oil that's run past bearings into housing.

Happened to me in 1998 when some stupid (insert obscenities or your choice) woman reversed into my bike knocking it over, bust the clutch lever, bent LH footrest but little other damage. Later I found oil in the points housing, quite a lot. It was early days in my Bullet ownership so I did not have access to Bulley Agony aunt Websites. My solution was to squirt loads of brake cleaner into the housing until all was clean, did it again a while later, no more problem

This accident happened a month ago and the oil is still leaking from behind the distributor (shown in the picture below)

So looks like i have buy some buy this distributor pinion extractor.?

@Nettshubby, the oil is leaking between timing case and distrib mounting (back side). I meant seal and gasket both.
