Hi all,
Another new face on the forum, been riding bikes since I was 16, first bike was a Yamaha SS so that should give my age away.
I've just bought myself a 2009 Electra EFI (against the advice of all my biking mates) and even though the bike hasn't arrived yet, already I have a question.
Having spent the last week reading anything Enfield related of course, I've discovered that my bike was among the batch that were recalled for a gearbox mod due to a potential siezure problem. So how do I know if the mod was done? Were the bikes stamped in some way to show they had been fixed?
I can already see there's lots of useful info here but so far I haven't found an answer to this one.
cheers, Andy

Andy, welcome! At the time your bike was first registered the Importers were Watsonian Squire (the sidecar people) who are still around. You could try asking them first since if it was warranty work they would probably know. I am not an Electra owner but I have not heard of a gearbox problem (though that doesn't mean there wasn't one) although I believe there is a well known (but easily fixed,) issue with the clutch cable snapping at the gearbox end. Hopefully some Electra types will chip in!

258 were recalled in Britain about the problem, the DVLA may be able to help:-

http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/apps/recalls ... =Blank&tx=

Vehicle Details

Reference : RM/2009/019
Manufacturer Ref :
Make: ROYAL ENFIELD
Model : Bullet Electra EFI and Bullet Classic EFI
Launch Date : 19/06/2009
Numbers Involved : 258
Build Start Date : 01/09/2008
Build End Date : 31/03/2009

Recall Details

Concern : REAR WHEEL MAY LOCK
Description : It has been identified that due to oil starvation caused by incorrect tolerances, third gear may seize on the gear box main shaft. Should this occur the possibility exists that the rear wheel could lock whilst the machine was being ridden.
Remedial Action : Recalled machines will have 3rd and 4th gears replaced, additionally the gearbox main shaft.

That is a very useful site Papasmurf has listed. It is at DVSA under Vehicle Recalls and might be useful for general modern vehicle concerns as well. There's nothing on it about the gearbox problems on my 1966 Continental GT though, I had to fix those myself!

It might be of some help to know if you are buying from a dealer or privately... If it's a dealer, get them to check it before they deliver.

Thanks for the replies, I'll try asking WS first and see if they know.
I bought the bike privately from a guy who's owned it one year and ridden it twice as it turned out it wasn't his cup of tea (presumably he prefers China to Indian!).
Sadly he has no service history for it, but on the plus side , it was cheap.
I'm not overly worried, just wanted to know if I need to be looking into it at some point.

2cvandy given the potentially deadly nature of the fault I suggest finding out before you ride the bike.
The DVLA will know which is why I posted the link.

EVERY bike from the effected batch was retro fitted with the new parts, in many instance before the bikes had even been run. REI sent technicians out around the world to do the repairs to every bike, though here in NZ as it only affected two bikes, both bikes were replaced in full, under warranty.

papasmurf,
the DVLA can tell me if a particular bike has had the modification fitted?
I thought they could only tell me which vin numbers were affected, and I already know mine was.
I just wondered if the bikes were marked in some way to show it has been done, as was done with the CX500 cam chain mods for instance.
Given that the recall notice mentions a "slight" chance of the gearbox locking, and given that the odds are probably in favour of the bike having been modified, and given that puling in the clutch would negate the life threatening nature of the problem, I'll still not get too stressed over it.
I just thought it prudent to check, if the bike had a fair few miles on I'd be less bothered but but's only done 5,000 so there's always a chance it slipped through the net.
BTW, as there's no emoticons on this site, how do you lot know when something is maybe meant to be a little tongue in cheek?

With such a life threatening fault the DVLA will know if your bike was recalled and modified. That is what the website is for.
