Not that difficult a job, just a bit long winded. Read all about the job here. (Link.)

But then a new problem raised its ugly head. The tail light refuses to shine and the brake light is very weak. I've looked at the earth under the rear mudguard, all seems well there.

Ideas?

If it isn't something simple like a bulb, and it was working before, something has come adrift in the back end wiring or there's a poor contact somewhere. Now you have checked the earth at the tail light, check back on the feed to the tail light and the rear stop light switch, and re-check the earth further up the line. A.

I have just cured the same problem on my electra X rear lights. It turned out to be one of the wires had rubbed through inside the plastic conduit where it had been compressed by the metal clip inside the mudguard

Many thanks you two.. I've fixed it. It was the earth under the mudguard. I loosened the bolt and gave it all a wriggle. Hey presto! Lights. I'll need to get it all off at the onset of winter and clean the earth fixture and bolt face up, but it works for now and that'll have to be good enough until the frost sets in.
