Has anyone fitted one of these? If so what was your experience, I fitted one on Friday and went for a run on Saturday to a bike show and broke down a few hundred yards from my destination, felt like fuel starvation,took my kit off to sort it and thought I'd try a kick before looking too far and she started!! I had travelled about ten miles with no problem but it was hot on Saturday, about 25 degrees. I carried on and enjoyed the bike show, on my return journey only went about 3 miles and it happened again, pulled in and gave her a couple of minutes and she started again, carried on and noticed on the overrun she would spit and fart a bit which she's never done before, so pulled in at the next layby and took the filter off. Continued on my way and done a detour of about 12 miles to give her a bit stick revving well through the gears and taking her up to about 60mph, no problems at all and no farting on the overrun.

the problem with these things is it hangs lower than the float level in the carb, hence it acts like a pre float level.

starving the engine of fuel.



if someone discribes the symptoms as you did, first thing i ask is if there one of those things on there.



to which my reply is; take it of and trow it away as far as you can.

They were a very popular at one time. (They used to be made of Brass) I use them on older vehicles (tanks) that may have a bit of a rust/paint/scale/dirt/ issue, and have never had a problem. with them. Between the magnet, the large sedimentary bowl, and the mesh filter nothing seems to get past.


How long have you had it? You could always return it for exchange, as it is obviously has a blockage some where...

I have just been out to the garage to check my Electra X, it has our hosts fuel tap fitted which has a built in filter bowl. Part number 145575 apparently it will also fit a Thunderbird 350.
Whether it could be fitted to any other model I don't know.


Another tap with built in filter is listed for a wide range of other Enfields part number 147022

Thanks for your replies guys, papa will check that out thanks, going to take the filter to bits see if there's a prob inside not much to go wrong then probably give it another try ( glutton for punishment)

Took filter apart and found slight narrowing of the outlet a bit of moulding when the filter was made was causing a restriction so used a 5mm drill down it with my fingers turning the drill, also the rubber gasket between the top and glass bowl was not in the correct position again causing another slight restriction so reassembled and fitted back on to the bike turned fuel on, let the bowl fill ensuring no air in the top, will have to wait to see what the result is as won't be using the bike now till after 3rd. September. Will report back the findings👍

Hi all as promised update on the filter having just got back from holiday, after doing the aforementioned fettling, I took Becky out for a good run 2 hours nonstop riding a mix of A,B and dual carriageway hard acceleration and took her up to an indicated 70mph on the digital speedo for a short time, covered approximately 80 miles and no sign of the previous problems well pleased 😎

As Tim NZ stated the Brass ones were ok but these are made of plastic and there is so much flash in the moulding that there is a restricted petrol flow. the one I bought was solid and required a lot of cutting and drilling to pass fuel.
