Hi guys, first time for everything - just about to attempt to replace the front tyre on Alice (350 Classic). I got a German Heidenau which looks good. I presume this is fairly straightforward - just unbolt the retainers at the base of the forks and release the cables for the speedo & front brake.
Any hints or tips? Cheers.

You will need good tyre levers - don't try it with the awful ones that come in the toolkit.
You also want some soap and a brush both for removing the old and fitting the new. Brush soapy water all round the rim and bead and it makes it so much easier. When using levers you need to "attack" as little as possible at a time. If you try to lever off too much it just won't go.
Start removing at the valve with the opposite bead in the well of the rim If the opposite bead isn't in the well you will STRUGGLE. I've used a G cramp before to squeeze the sides of the tyre together to keep the beads in the well. Refit starting opposite the valve.
DO fit new rim tapes, it's just not sense to use the old one for what they cost. Also, it pays to fit new tubes unless they look really OK.
Be prepared to tackle rust on the inside of the rim - there's usually some there.

Oh, and check the spoke tension while you're at it. If any spoke needs adjusting you may need to file off any excess that comes through the nipple.

Another thing - talcum powder on the tube when refitting. Helps it slide into place and prevents nipping.

Pretty much what PeteF said.... Do not use tyre levers when putting the tyre on, as it is very likely that you will 'nick' the tube. I did mine last week and managed to get the tyre back on entirely by hand, no tools needed. Patience, care, and goliath thumbs are all that is required.
