I take your point, Pete, but, as there is hardly any return oil into the tank, I don't want to risk a run ending with a seized top end.

I suggest that you also carefully remove the timing cover looking for a blockage in the oilways where they pass between the crankcase and timing cover these are easily blocked by excess sealant.
