Hi Norm, we 'spoke' recently about converting ElectraX gearbox to right side. I've just had a proper look with the bike on the bench to see what's what. Looks like the existing gear change shaft emerges from gearbox 'front overhang' then goes through engine oil tank before emerging on lhs through primary case. Instead of cutting/welding the shaft as discussed (I don't have the equipment to do this accurately), I now have a quote from Mine Host for the alternative shaft to come through rhs.
How to seal the back of gearbox overhang, oil tank & primary case successfully?

Hi Stephen,I'm not sure about the Hitchcocks kit but from what I remember you have to remove the gearbox to fit a plug to the inside of the gearbox shaft hole, I could be wrong,not sure why it couldn't be fitted from the inside. This is why I cut down the shaft and it was able to let it go out through the existing hole. The hole through the oil tank I left open apart from the shaft poking in on the right hand side. I fitted a Thunderbird inner primary which didn't have the shaft hole and I just put a bolt and nut in the hole in the outer primary, you can do the same to the inner primary

Hi Stephen, there may be another problem with the conversion, I can't remember if the new brake pedal will fit straight on or if I had to weld a lug on or something,if it had an existing mounting socket for the brake lever or if I had to cut off the cross over shaft pivot point, I just did what I had to do, was quite a few years ago. Maybe the Hitchcocks kit just mounts to the cross over shaft lug with a special adaptor.

My Electra-X had the Watsonian's right-foot shift conversion from new at the dealers, I think the frames still had the lug for the traditional left-foot rear brake pedal intact, in which case it was simply a matter of bolting on the old-style parts. I shall check next time I am in the garage.
