Very fiddly yes. You can do it by the roadside but you will need an Allen key to undo the inspection cap and a pair of long nose pliers to hook the cable onto the arm. It was too much hassle to route it properly so to get me home I routed it on the outside of the tank.It was a bit stiff to operate but got me back. Mine snapped in heavy traffic in the middle of a city. No way would I have been able to ride it cluchless through that.

I can't even see the arm. Looks like a drain the oil out of the gearbox job and take the cover off.
(The clutch is still operating OK I just don't trust the old cable.)

Taking the cover off will not help ‘cos the ball and ramp mechanism is mounted to the inside of the cover, ergo, the cover must be fitted so that the entry point of the cable is correctly aligned with the mechanism. ‘Tis fiddly but do-able, I don’t have a hoist but leaning the bike over to about 45 deg. certainly helped. Adam, by the wonders of internet shopping I have very thin bent long nosed pliers on the way. When they arrive I will make another attempt. I also noticed that the small access cover had never been removed before so the set screw and lock nut clutch adjuster has never been checked/adjusted since the bike was new.
(It states in the manual consult an Enfield dealer to get that done, how I laughed.)

Undo lock nut, back off set screw, turn it back in until resistance is felt then hold whilst tightening lock nut. A small bladed screwdriver held lightly on the blade between finger and thumb is the best way to find the point of resistance or it is easy to go too far. Don't back the screw off again as some would say, that's not applicable to the 5 speed clutch. Do this first with a slack cable, then adjust the cable for minimum free play at the lever.

Cheers Frank. I have also purchased the clutch rod with bearings, which will be fitted at the MOT/service.
No point in the clutch/final drive casing being taken off twice.

Still got a feeling that the arm is fractured. The cable would go slack as a result and possibly the cable collar rode up onto the adjuster because of it. Probably why you can't see the arm, because it has been bent beyond the inspection cap. Gearbox cover off to inspect though and that is harder than it looks.

Addendum, just because I can't see the arm does not mean it is not there, I have a multitude of health problems and my getting into a position to look properly is very difficult.

Another addendum, I went to use the bike this morning and had to slack off the clutch cable back to where is was before it went slack and I had to tighten it.
