If your cable has a right angle metal bend where it goes into the gearbox then it is likely to be the modified version. If the cable adjuster is screwed directly into the gearbox cover it is pre modification. Your problem is either a frayed cable or fractured actuating arm. Mine snapped at 7000 miles at the nipple gearbox end. I replaced it with the modified arm, cable and cover and have had no problems since, mind you that was only 4000 miles ago so time will tell.

Frank, I just had a close look at the cable and it looks to me as if the cap on the outer of the cable the clutch end was not fitted properly at manufacture and the outer has just slid into the bottom of the end cap where it should have been in the first place. But as I have a new cable on the way, it is not worth me faffing about with the old one.

I always carry a spare and the tools to fit it. Such a pain when they break miles away from home.

Simon, I was going to double up all cables anyway. I always carry spares on our other three bikes I have just not got around to doing with the Enfield.

Anyone who has developed some degree of mechanical sympathy after years of riding, should not have a problem changing gears without using the clutch. It involves matching the engine revs with the gearbox revolutions. The only difficult part is trying to time arriving at traffic lights when they turn green.

Leon, with these gearboxes people seem to have enough of a problem changing with the clutch let alone without.

last broken clutch cable was in Wolverhampton 1959 & had clutchless 60 mile 2 hour ride home from the Villiers works where I had picked up a box of spares for the little m'cycle repair business I was involved with at the time.

.... the outer has just slid into the bottom of the end cap .... I was close then, maybe half a cigar?

I had no idea that changing a clutch cable was a major operation, I am going to leave it until the bike has a major service and MOT. (This will be the first motorcycle I have ever owned that changing a clutch cable at the roadside would be impossible. ) I though the BMW was bad enough but this is ridiculous.
