Hi folks. I'm thinking of changing my 5-speed Electra-X to right-foot gear change, so I can rear-set the pegs. Looking at Mine Host's catalogue page 57, I see a kit to do this. Problem is, I don't think I need all the bits. Would I be right in thinking all I need for a 1-down, 4-up pattern is the short right-handed gear change shaft and to machine my existing cover to take the shaft (plus a couple of bungs & gaskets...)? I'm assuming the camplate is only needed for 1-up, 4-down.

Stephen that is what I did with my Electra, all I did was cut down the existing gearshift rod, cut about 40mm off the splined end and welded that onto the other side of the little selector arm, machined the outer cover for the shaft, fitted an oil seal in the cover and cut the end of the rod that went through the motor so that it went through the existing oil seal on the inner side of the box and this kept it all nice and stable. I welded the splined end on in my lathe to keep it all true. On the primary side I fitted a Thunderbird K/S inner primary to get rid of the starter motor lump

Thanks Norm, that seems like an even better solution! How critical is the positioning of the new hole in the cover, and what sort of seal did you fit into the cover - just an 'O' ring, or something better than that?

Stephen I got a standard oil seal to fit the shaft and just got the case machined to take the seal. As for getting the hole lined up it needs to be very close. What I did I had a big long 1/2 inch drill bit I had made up, then I wrapped insulation tape around it in a couple of places so that it was a snug fit in through the engine case hole and then I just used the drill to make a small indentation in the outer cover, then took the cover off and drilled through the cover from the inside. I set the cover up square in the drill press and then got a mate to machine it for the seal. You could use a piece of rod with a point on it that is a snug fit through the cases
