Does anyone know a good way of adjusting the gear selector ratchet on an Albion type gearbox?

Presumably you mean the adjuster and locknut pn the outer cover? I used to do it by trial and error, if it wasn't selecting a gear properly, either up or down, I would turn it one way a little and ride it. If it was worse in that direction, turn it back same amount plus a little more. You should, in theory, reach a happy medium (and the psycic type may help!) where it changes positively both ways. There is no set "turn 1/4 turns does this" I'm afraid.

No, it's actually the ratchet mechanism which sits around the neutral selector shaft. It is a toothed plate within a toothed ring.

There is a small amount of adjustment allowed on the three mounting points of the selector itself however in my experience 99% of issues with the selection come from a clutch that isn't clearing.

Not much chance of accuracy in a box with fourteen neutrals. SIGH!

Neutrals everywhere - and the only one that is hard to find is between and second! All part of the Enfield experience. Part of the problem is that the gears require a certain technique of maintaining pressure on the lever whilst releasing the clutch and I tend to forget this after riding my AJS with a slick AMC box.

Being perfectly serious here have you tried bigger boots? And steel toecaps may help.

Seemingly endless problems with my gearbox. Having solved the problem of the kickstart ratchet jamming, I went for a ride today. I can get second and third, but it sounds like shaking a box full of gravel.

They are pretty straight forward as cog boxes go. I'd pull it all out which you can do without removing the case from the bike and check that nothing is bust. I'll repeat that the vast majority of gearbox problems especially false neutrals come from a poorly clearing clutch however gravelly noise is a whole different thing. First thing I'd be tempted to do with noise symptoms is drain the box and look for swarf. Any sign at all and I'd strip it in a heartbeat.
