Hi all...what "size" generator is appropriate for a 500 cc Bullet? My Bullet is pure DC with a 65/60 watt headlight bulb and the rest is all LED. Maybe at some time in the future I would experiment with twin pluggin the bike; maybe I would like to add a USB power socket for a GPS? Right now the RE oem generator does not deliver enough power, so a 120 watt or 200 watt generator will be a future mod. Any personal experience or just some good advice is more than welcome... regards Jacob

Hi I run a 210 watt sparx unit, comes complete with rotor stator and reg rec unit.simple to install 3 wires from stat to reg unit black to earth red to ign switch and its done good bit of kit even at low speed no light flicker

it won't help that the DC models are at least 16 years old now, so the rotor has probably lost some of its original magnetism, hence the poor output. If the stator is still in good nick you might find that a rotor upgrade (genuine Lucas or Sparx, which claims to use stronger magnets) revives your electrics. If you need a 60/55W headlamp bulb for lots of night-time use, fair enough, but you could always revert to a less hungry 35/35W bulb, you can still get these in quartz halogen for 12V, either in British Pre-focus or H4 form.



That said, I do have a Sparx alternator waiting to go on my next project, though it's a single phase model which will be perfectly adequate. The three phase 210W version will need a new regulator/rectifier, as your originals would be single phase, though a new reg/rectifier might be a good move anyway.

Scotty and Adrian thanks for replies I will look into the Sparx solution, to see if this is the one to go for. Since I do need a powerful headlight I need some additional power to run everything. The 120 watt alternator from our host was my first thought. My Bullet is a 2003 AC/DC, but re-build to pure DC with the original alternator and the A reg One rectifier/regulator. The wiring is modified, but not entirely changed. For starters I will do a complete new wiring after some serious testing the excisting one. Any thoughts on using the old 3-wire alternator wiring? Or should I find/make a new wire design? Jacob

I'd be tempted to re-wire it from scratch. The old loom is probably a bit tired by now. A.

The old loom is more or less renewed with better wires (16 amp automotive cables). It's the design I have had to modify, but it's still not an optimal solution. So, I want to make a completely new loom: new wires and new design. A new alternator will be installed at a later time, but a new loom soon and ready for a more powerful alternator.
