Well I replaced the stud yesterday.

washers, nylock nuts AND loctite.

And we are off to Tunbridge Wells soon. I am NOT expecting any problems.

If it comes undone again, then more drastic action will be taken!

Her who should be obeyed and I went to The Historic Vehicle Show at Llanddudno on Monday and she was fascinated by STATIONARY ENGINES I reminded her that HARRYtheENFIELD was a stationary engine (he is booked in with our hosts on Wednesday) I must promote this interest for further gains LoL

If they're studs that screw into an alloy castings (e.g. fork sliders, chain case, etc.) I think they're BSF, but for through studs on the frame they would have used CEI/British Cycle Thread. Even my 2005 Electra-X still has some 3/8" BSC frame studs. A.

Adrian, you need coarse threads into aluminium. Unless threads are inserts.

Papasmurf, you or I would have wanted coarse threads into alloy, but the factory knew better! The set of 2002 crankcases I bought from our hosts still had 26 TPI 5/16" CYCLE threads for the cylinder studs, though they changed to metric later that year. The alloy fork legs have 5/16" BSF studs and I'm sure the chain tensioner uses 5/16" BSF, at least pre-metric models.

It wasn't just RE, too. As late as the 1969 season BSA/Triumph went over to UNC/UNF fasteners with UNC replacing fine thread screws into alloy!

Adrian, there is a problem with 26TPI threads that many people do not understand. Just tighten a 26TPI nut up to what seems a perfectly reasonable 35ft/lbs and you are putting a pull of a ton on whatever the other end is screwed into.
So even 21ft/lbs is risky on 26TPI. I have worked on engines where the max torque on camshaft bearing retaining bolts was 5 yes five ft/lbs
