Two or three teeth smaller would make a useful difference in the range the OP was hoping for.

Before you start and change the rear sprocket. If you have a motorcycle shop that deals in spare parts nearby, take the front sprocket in and ask them if you cam have a look through the sprockets they have available. Many years ago I ended up using a honda sprocket on a Kawasaki sidecar outfit to get the required gearing. You will be suprised at what is interchangeable.
