If I leave my Electra EFI ticking over on the side stand then go to bring it upright the engine just cuts out, and it's as soon as I move it not when it's finally upright whether I do it slowly or just sit on it to the upright position. It starts again ok, any ideas. This bike is new to me so it is totally different to my last bike.

My EFI wouldn't even run at all on the side stand. I have now disconnected the connector for the cut out switch which is on the left side near the frame / side panel area if i remember correctly and all is well unless of course i forget to raise the side stand before i ride off!

Is it the MOVEMENT OF THE BIKE causing it, or a SLIGHT movement of the stand, which affects its TOO-SENSITIVE switch? Could you try various combinations of holding, wriggling the stand etc? I'm asking this because I DID have a problem with the sidestand switch on mine. Replaced it and all was well. Or you could bypass the switch temporarily with a spare bit of wire then see if moving the bike itself causes the same problem; this would narrow it all down a bit. Good luck, Chris

I thought that was the whole point of the side stand switch, to prevent it running when on the stand. Stops you riding off with it down and prevents oil starvation damage running it at an angle.

Frank, no, it should RUN on the stand but will cut out if you then engage gear without flipping the stand up.

Sorry, PeteF, but none of my three Bullets have done that. The sidestand on all three cut the engine completely, and won't let the engine fire if you crank it. On the other hand, the behaviour you describe is correct for all my Japanese bikes!



Regardless, if it's the same wiring as mine (being an EFI), you don't need to bypass the switch with a wire, you just follow the wire from the switch up to the loom and unplug it. Then the engine will start and run whether or not it's on the stand. If I were RoSy that's what I would do next.

Mmmm, the only RE with a side stand switch that I've had dealings with behaved as I describe. That was a Sixty 5. Could have been altered I suppose.

Thanks for the info, I just thought I had a serious problem, while we are on the electrics, does dialectric silicon grease transfer or prevent a current?I can understand the waterproofing of a connection on the outside, but to stuff it inside a connector / battery terminals etc would that prevent a current.

Dielectric grease is non-conductive, also if you have an accident due to bypassing a side stand switch and proved, then your liable.
