Girish writes: "When you say air screw is running too weak you mean too lean or too rich. I assume at just 1/4-1/2 turn out, it is running too rich. no?"

I don't think I said the "air screw is running too weak", but it's my fault for not explaining myself very well.

As you know, unscrewing the air screw increases the amount of air going to the engine at idle, without increasing the amount of fuel. Thus it makes the mixture "weaker" or "leaner" (both terms are commonly used and mean the same thing).

As a general rule the air screw would typically be 1 - 2 turns out if the correct idle jet was installed and everything else was working OK. The fact that yours must be turned much further in suggests that something is making the mixture too weak/lean and you are having to compensate by turning the air screw further in than normal.

That is what gave Frank the clue, I think, that there might be an air leak somewhere. The vacuum inside the inlet manifold will draw air in through any leaks, making the mixture reaching the combustion chamber leaner than it should be. At the moment you are compensating by moving the air screw to a richer position than normal, but as you know it doesn't work very well.

I suspect that once you've fixed the air leak the idle will be much more stable, and you will find that the air screw must be wound out somewhat further to get the mixture right.

Thack, no I didn't give it that much thought actually, hence my shortish answer. I just knew that an air leak can cause irratic or fast idle. Spraying it with wd40 to prove is the genius I didn't think of. We all learn something from these posts!

Thack, I agree with Frank. The idea of squirting wd-40 was genius! There is no other way I could have found out about the leak.
I've been asking here in US forums about this issue but no one could figure out and was frustrated for two weeks.

I must say very insightful people in this forum. Same goes with Hitchcock products. Quality is incomparable to what we get here in US market.

Girish, your comments are very kind! However, we shouldn't be too cheerful until you've cured the air leak and confirmed that the idle is OK. Until then, we're still hoping for the best!

True Thack, I reopend the manifold and used silicone seal to gasket it properly. I will run the motorcycle again after 24 hrs period is over and see!
I really think that leak was the issue.

Thanks,

Hi Girish and others I run my Bullet 500 with a Mikuni TM32 + free flowing exhuast (# 91007), the Hitchcocks tuned head and a Malossi red foam filter. My carb set up is slightly different from yours, but then again I have been very carefull to avoid air leaks. I have used red silicone at the header pipe/exhuast port to make it air tight. I have used a gasket and Blue Hylomar at the alu manifold and my "rubber" tube between manifold and carb is a piece of silicone vacuum hose. So I'm almost certain no air leaks to fool my carb tuning. The pilot jet is a 27,5, main jet 190, P8 needle jet with the needle in top groove (I could use a P6 for more accurate tuning options). The air bleed screw is 1,5 turn out and my throttle cable has 2 mm of free play. The bike runs great and the idle is good. It's slightly high set, but I have done this on purpose because of cold wheather... Hope this can help you and others in your own tuning process (if not ask Tom Lyons/Acecafe)... good luck Jacob

Thanks now my idle is perfect after resealing the inlet manifold with silicone seal! Motorcycle idles perfectly. But I did notice if i put the motorcycle in 4th gear at the speed of 40mph, I hear this tweet or whistle bell like sound. I don't notice it much if I put 4th gear when bike is running at 45+ mph. Is this normal? Do I need to retune or rejet my main? Any suggestions.

Thanks again!

Glad it's idling OK.

I don't think this strange noise can be anything to do with the main jet, but I suggest that you start a new thread with this question so that more people will read it.

Sounds like a tuneful breather, if the bike is running fine I'd leave it be.
