Interesting but ultimately pointless debate. I dont take my late 4 speed classic above about 55mph unless overtaking then hammer up to 65 maybe touching 70 briefly. Tomorrow I go to Dumfriess from Glasgow on an 865cc Trumpet of the Hinckley derivation and will hold it at 70mph ish, plus. Horses for courses and data or otherwise just use yer nous and choose a bike fit for purpose.

too right!

I don't need Tornado to go fast, that is not his purpose.

He can hide in the woods very well though!

Bugger!

I should have seen that one coming.

However I have two basha's on the bike, One to keep me dry, and one to keep Tornado dry, but excessive moisture can be interesting, He still turns white!

ok, ok, it's Thunderbolt, I have not got a picture of Tornado under cover!

My oil never gets never gets over 60c either. I would have thought that the crankcase oil reservoir was quite an efficient cooler and quite as good as the more usual Trimph/BSA type which are more typical of fifties designs.
My bullet certainly runs cooler than my B31.
Simon, modern engines cool the oil in the gearbox??? I suspect that's why they need oil coolers - even my little CBF250 (and than runs way hotter than the Bullet)

To be fair, though, I think the concern some people have is that this doesn't really tell you how hot certain parts of the engine are getting, and how hot the oil gets when it's in contact with those. In the tank we are measuring an average temperature for the oil. The really hot stuff (supposing there is any) gets mixed in with the rest so we can't tell actually how hot it was.

I don't claim to have a position, or any knowledge, on this apart from a memory that overheating of the cylinder head in the exhaust port area was considered a problem "back in the day", hence Royce Creasey's article about how to modify the head to mitigate it.

For what it's worth, on my UCE the oil temperature (as measured in the feed channel from the pump) gets up to 80C on a long run. I expect it will go above that in hot weather.

I’m not sure where this discussion about oil temperatures is heading. Is it suggested that the oil temperature may become too hot for safety? Or too cool for efficient running? Both fears seem to me to be unfounded. A multigrade oil of the correct grade will cope with anything a Bullet engine can put it through. Even the emulsion (mayonnaise) that these engines produce (more with some makes of oil than others) is nothing to worry about however unsightly it looks. It’s just another sign that the oil is doing what it ought to do – holding the moisture in suspension.

From my point of view I'm suggesting nothing about the oil temperature, just reporting what I've measured. I strongly suspect it's just fine and a complete non-issue. On the UCE, that is: I don't know about the iron-barrel.

The iron barrel produces Hellmans finest mayonnaise when doing countless short runs of 3 miles to the shops and bank but clears when you hammer the bike at 55mph for an hour or two.
