Had a run out to LMT motorcycles in Louth today on my Sixty5, longest run I've done so far. No problems, apart fron loosing my bar end mirror on the way back! Anyway, it would be nice to have a re-settable trip on the speedo. Now I have a speedo still fitted in a headlamp shell from a 1957 Norton 19S, which has a trip fitted. I Think it may be a chronometric, but not sure without digging it out again. If the drive ratio is the same, and it will fit where the Enfield one is, I may give it a go. I Seem to remember that the Enfield drive ratio is 2 : 1?

2:1 sounds right but also remember direction of rotation! I think the Indian speedo cable has a different fitting at the Casquette end but our Hosts have cables to suit most combinations of drive box and clock.

A 1957 Norton 19S takes a S.467/203 Chronometric

Where as a 500 cc bullet from the same age would have a S467/59/L*

it may show the wrong speed, but then the modern ones are not any better.

If it's of any help, the drive ratio on my 2014 B5 is definitely 2:1.

Don't chronometrics require the cable to turn in the same direction as every other speedo? That is, clockwise when looking down onto the end of the cable (the same direction as the needle on the speedo turns). I can't believe they would have reversed it.

And although it doesn't apply to my bike, the early Indians and brit bikes, inc Norton singles, had the drive on the rear wheel. Would that mean the cable turns the opposite way? Anyway, I'll check it out today, after I fit the new idle jet.

Speedo direction the same for back and front wheel drive. Its the drive boxes that can vary ie cable over or under the axle.

Thanks all, unfortunately I didn't get to comparing the speedos today. Fitted new standard idle jet and went for a run to warm engine up, ........and got lost in Worksop! Got a nice steady tickover though when I got back.

Got speedo out of Norton shell. Number is as Scaly said, but with an"N" after it. Not taken one out of Enfield yet, but a spare cable I have, I think from an earlier Bullet, has same thread as speedo, but nut is bigger than drive end on bike..Got to check rotations and ratios yet.
