Ivan, best place for Twin specific advice is the Interceptor Group as described. There are a few mods you can do (not lots, they're not that bad!) but getting the crank balanced to modern standards is probably the most important. Did you ride the bike before dismantling? How did it ride?

Thanks mark, no i never road it, in fact i have never ridden an RE in my life !! always had triumphs bsa and Japanese. The bike came as a non runner missing lots of parts. But upon stripping the engine it is in remarkably good condition.

Ivan, that sounds promising! At the risk of teaching Granny, do get a Workshop Manual and follow it. These are not difficult engines to work on but there are some things that are vital to understand, how to remove and refit the crank from the cases for instance! There are a few special tools you will need but these can be bought/hired from our Hosts. (Or I have them, sssh, it's a secret!) Do you know what the bike is? Post the engine number prefix and that should help identify it. Can you post pics? And where are you, that might help too.

Hi Mark, after being advised by the RE club Australia where i live, the bike was identified by Graham Scarth as a 57 SM all numbers including cases frame and gearbox are matching. It found its way to Canada USA then OZ. So many parts missing i will not be doing it original.

Ivan, that bike has been on quite a journey! SM parts shouldn't be too difficult to find, (the toolbox is probably the hardest bit) but I'm talking from the UK rather than Oz so I sympathise. Good luck with it and post some pics if you can as you go along? As it happens a 1961 SM has recently landed in my garage, (this is the one fitted with the bathtub) and the toolbox and bits associated with that are very hard to find.
