There again, anybody with historic bikes classed as tax exempt do not have to pay.

TFL says...

Historic vehicles

All vehicles that have a 'historic' vehicle tax class will be exempt from the ULEZ. Information on the eligibility criteria for the historic vehicle exemption is on Gov.uk.

Which the government defines as...

Vehicle Excise Duty: 40 year rolling exemption for
classic vehicles

Who is likely to be affected?

Owners of vehicles built 40 or more years ago.
General description of the measure
The measure extends the exemption from Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) to vehicles
constructed 40 or more years ago on an automatic rolling basis on 1 April each year.
So anybody that is thinking of getting something older, a Meteor 700 for example, Can go to London and smile! But don't park in the Westminster motorcycle bays, they charge! (Nobody else does!).

Actually, I don't think it would be fair to make a decent Redditch bike suffer London traffic, best pop it on a decent quiet road and tell it, "Let's go!"

As one with fecked up breathing gear largely caused by working in London & surrounding area pollution I am all for it. Strange how on leaving that part of the world 15 years ago for Darkest, dankest today, Derbyshire my breathing vastly improved, as an aside so did our quality of life.

They have a similar thing being considered in Paris.

No vehicles made before the year 2000. You will have three years to get newer vehicles before they are banned.

and for now?, when pollution is bad they do 2 things. They make the metro free, usually for 2-3 days in a row and ban half the cars from paris.

Being France, there is no messing about, They announce a day or so before , whether cars with even numbers or odd numbers on their plates will be banned for which days.

In a bit of a contrast to London, there are tens of thousands of motorcycles and scooters. Maybe over 100,000. they help cut congestion and are allowed to park just about anywhere, footpaths etc, for free. you only get in trouble if you cause a genuine (Not 2 cm over a line!!??!) obstruction.

Its about time they did something about the filth being spewed from diesel buses. Many lorries have the exhaust pointing vertically behind the cab but buses are allowed to have exhausts at just the right level to choke pedestrians and other road users. And don't even get me started on diesel trains! How archaic is that - one small step away from steam (yet the Southern had AC electrics almost 100 years ago). The fact is the infernal combustion engine has hardly changed in 120 years, the principle remains the same. Whether there is any truth in the old rumours that the oil companies have stiffled innovation I don't know, but the alternative electrical/battery vehicles are just as polluting in their own ways and absurdly ineffective as a sensible means of transportation for anything but local trips.

Of course if there is widespread take-up of electric vehicles, does this country have enough generating capacity for recharging all those vehicle batteries? No, we've closed power stations to meet "green" emission targets! A.

It'll be back to working in the fields, never even visiting the village next to yours, except for a wedding maybe.

And while we've been closing down the mines and power stations - causing mass unemployment along the way - the Germans are busy building new ones and selling us those ridiculously inefficient windmill eyesores that are blighting our land and seascapes. With the electric/battery vehicles there is also the question of pollution from the production and transportation of some very toxic materials required to build them as well as the the charging of the batteries every few hours.
