Sorry Jojje, just re-read your latest post properly! Perhaps another RE **is** needed as a project bike, something to get you spannering with some zeal. I have to say mine completely evaporated today, but it's back to the garage tomorrow.

Adrian: I have a BMW R100RS -83 which oils its plugs and I'm planning to change the heads and maybe a ring job as soon as it weather warms up my cold garage a bit.

I guess Spring arrives a little later in Finland. At least the bits are all easy to get to. Way off topic now, but I have a friend who races a CRMC sidecar outfit with one of those engines fitted! A.

Thanks all for your suggestions. Here's the update. With my limited technical knowledge I was convinced that the fact the bike started fine and would tick over no problem but stall after a short distance it must be a fuel problem. I stripped and cleaned the carb, tap and tank cap to no avail and changed the fuel - all with no improvement. Ok, fit a new coil result? no spark - I was going backwards. I fitted a new tci unit and that has solved the problem. However on changing over the unit the middle wire seemed loose so maybe it was just a bad/intermittent connection. I don't know and now it's fixed I don't much care even though I could possibly have been spared the expense!

So now you have the most important spares to carry with you on an Electra at all times taped up under the seat, spare coil and TCI unit. These components are not off the shelf from auto parts store and as long as you have them you will never need them, best insurance ever
