My 535 lightning backfires through the carb on start up if I twist the throttle.

I presume that you've set it with any auto advance mechanism, bob weights etc, in the full advanced position. Otherwise you are likely to,be starting in a fast running setting and from there to over advanced.

And then there is the question, manual advance or auto advance and as Simon says, if it is auto advance are you wedging the advancer fully open when setting it at 3/8th before TDC

Hi thanks for the replies it's a manual advance and as I stated set up according to the manual or the best of my ability, the only thing I wonder what is the triangle mark on the inlet timing gear just above the timing mark . Any ideas ? Thanks again.

Reggie, could that "triangle mark" be a letter A? There are 3 different inlet sprockets, one with no marks, one marked A and one B. I think you should have one without marks but I'll check.

THanks Mark. That's interesting to know and I will be interested what you can find out and to wether it makes any difference to the timing.

Hi Norm. Yes when it's fully retarded I seems lifeless, and adjust it a little to advance it kicks like a mule thanks for your input.

Reg couple more questions, what mag, what side of the mag does the advance cable enter and you are setting the timing at full advance on the lever, 3/8th before TDC and points just beginning to open? Silly questions but they must be asked
