That's 1/4" British Standard Pipe Thread, (also referred to as gas thread) commonly found in smaller bore pneumatic and hydraulic components, also some automotive fittings including lots of old British bike and stationary engine petrol tap threads and fuel pipe fittings, as well as some gas supply fittings, hence gas thread. Fill yer boots.

Adrian's right, British standard pipe, not plumbing as I stated. Sizing system refers to the ID of the pipe but they were never standard so was always a bit confusing. My central heating system is all in bsp iron pipe and cast radiators - lovely old stuff which will never wear out.

BSP is the pipe standard, even though we have had metric out here for 40 years they can't change the pipe size, they just refer to it as a metric size but the diameter and thread sizes can never change
