I came across this in the spring 1963 issue of The Countrymman and thought it rather appropriate.

Roads and Lanes>br<
Roads are always mindful of a purpose,>br<
Have places and objectives on their mind.>br<
Lanes are like a dreamers thoughts, like love>br<
That reaches in no certainty to find,>br<
But full of quiet hope. Roads are impatient>br<
With inefficiency. Lanes love to wind.>br<
Roads stream across the continent and race>br<
By bridge and tunnel to their journeys end,>br<
Speeding the restless millions on their way.>br<
But lanes go sauntering along the bend>br<
Of streams you know; in places you remember>br<
With poignant love, await you like a friend.>br<
