I assumed (bloody stupidly) that when the Devious LA got rid of tax discs, they would also cut down on unnecessary red tape.

If you had a tax free vehicle, you had to contact them to get a tax disc that showed no charge, and I expected with the exit of the tax disc, their computer would simply ignore electric, historical and other tax exempt classes, but what do I see on their website...

"You still need to apply for vehicle tax even if you don’t need to pay vehicle tax."

SO if I have an old vehicle, I have to inform them that i am going to pay nothing to receive nothing every year?

AND If I forget to pay them nothing to get nothing, do I get a big fine? I bet THAT'S why they left this rubbish running!

Actually, I find myself agreeing with dvla. If the vehicle is taxed, even at a nil amount, it's a way of checking that it's insured if it's on the road. There are too many uninsured vehicles out there as it is without making it any easier.

er...NO

Thier site shows if you are MOT'd or not and they fine you if you forget to renew your insurance.

Everybody should have insurance and MOT where necessary, but it's not that.

It's about closing the loop wherever possible. Continuous insurance is compulsory, and rightly so, if a bike(vehicle) is on the road or not SORNed. Some free of cost vehicles still have to be MOT'd and some people are simply not honest or do not care. I frankly have no problem with the current system, indeed it is as simple as it has ever been. I do all of mine on line and get a confirmation email sent to confirm that I have renewed my VED. What's not to like, it has been a real change for the better. They even spell out in simple terms on the renewal notice the exact conditions which apply if you want to take 14 days to get round to sorting out your insurance and/or MOT, no offence is committed if you take the 14 days to get the VED issued BUT you must not take or park the vehicle on the road. Simples.

If you don't have tax you have to declare sorn, if you don't do either with dvla how are they to know which vehicles are still on the road and need mot and insurance?.

so it is just there so after a year you have to say you want tax or SORN?

OK, I can understand that, but if you didn't MOT a MOT needed vehicle, or didn't renew the insurance, they would fine you after 14 days, so obviously they already know.

so I still don't really see the need for informing them for a no payment tax when they a know if the MOT and insurance has not been renewed, except in the instance where the tax due date in significantly different from the mot and/or the insurance renewal dates.

Just seems like having a fuse to protect a fuse to protect a fuse.

I not trying to be overly negative, but just asking if its really necessary!

Scaly,
You are not quite right about MOT.
If you have a taxed vehicle (and therefore insured - it has to be - continuous insurance) you don't need to renew the MOT when it becomes due. (this information from my local MOT chap)
You will have to MOT before the tax becomes due of course (or SORN it)
You obviously need to MOT before using it on the road, but you can drive the vehicle without MOT to a pre-arranged MOT test.
I suspect that's the next loop they will close and move towards continuous MOT as that's a big temptation to wrong-doers who know they have a big repair bill due. Any plod can, of course, check if any vehicle is taxed, insured and MOTed.
