Bang on, Norm.

The crankcase vents directly onto the top of the motor; they all 'leak' there. It is a design feature. The later cases have the vent outlet into the top of the oil tank.

Colin. I did the timing chest breather mod but didnt insert the large bore breather. the engine also had brand new jp pistons fitted on a +.40 overbore. When i started it for the first time i went to check the return oil flow and got oil blasted in my face at a distance of about 2 foot. I then tapped and plugged the hole i made and the problem instantly dissapeared. As mark says you must fit the large diameter breather or you will be pissing in the wind. Ed

So here is another possible idea for the breather, has anybody tried a breather off the oil filler neck, this would avoid having to split the cases and drill a breather hole in the top of the oil tank

And Tom I did a sneaky thing on a 54 Meteor, I got a hacksaw blade and went right around the case join with it just raking it very slightly, cleaned the join with metho and put a fine bead of JB Weld right around the case. Not the best method but in this case it has stopped the leaks and the problem with pulling down a motor that is otherwise running well is you open up a can of worms once you start, If the cases have to come apart in the future just go around gently with a dremel and clean the JB off

Hi norm. Yes i run a 8mm pipe elbow out the oil filler neck and then i run it around the back of the engine casings and onto the chain sprocket. It works very well at venting the oil tank as my crankcase breather enters the oil tank on a sealed system. But this breather could not cope with the pulse wave travelling through the new drilling from the timing chest. Ed

I did the bridging dowel mod on my 59 Connie a few years back and it was quite effective.. Neat and tidy invisible job.

Hi Ed,what was the diameter of the hole you had from the timing case though to the oil tank?
That allowed this pulse wave to build pressure up in the oil tank.
Also did you have a one way valve in the original outlet from the timing case, which should have created a vacumm. That's what i found with my 612,with a "Krank vent" in the breather outlet pipe
air would be drawn in breather pipes i welded into the rocker boxes instead of out.I took it that was because the pressure in the crankcase was lowered due to fitting a "Krank vent"
Mark haven't had a chance to get over to the interceptor site but will try later.

Tom i think it's from an old article on curing Twin oil leaks,i have done
1 engine following there guide but haven't run it to see if it works. And
they recommend an 1/8" hole be drilled from the timing case to the oil tank.

And what i'm reading into it now is they now drill a larger hole than that and
insert a large bore outlet into the top of the oil tank with no one way valve.
Personally i don't like the look of that pipe on interceptors, and would prefer
a more discreet method such as a Bullet type hose from the top of the oil tank
with a one-way valve, hopefully well hidden under the Meteor generator.
cheers
