Hey guys i was starting to drain the oil from my bike and also doing a change on the gearbox oil , does anyone have an idea of what is a good oil to use that is available , that would be the modern version of what was used back in '49

Oh dear oil again. Everyone has an opinion on what oil to use but most now keep quiet about it, most modern oils are better than they were in 194? , the original oil grade's are still available and classic 20W50 is OK for most bikes if the oil you choose can get on the clutch avoid modern car oils with slippery additives. You pay your money and take your choice, just change it regularly.

Also what about the amount of oil , everyone seems to have a differant view , its just that i am new to Enfields , and i don't want to mess up.

Some more leading questions?, the gearbox may need to be packed with grease or if fitted with seals or sealed bearings you can use straight 50 engine oil or 90 grade gear oil. As for the amounts fill it to the maker's recommendations, some say the engine uses excessive amounts of oil if filled to the full mark, I do not agree (another urban myth just like leaving the filler cap loose).
