Wow,great response. I like what I'm hearing about the reliability, I had a feeling if they were looked after well they could actually work out quite cheap to keep on the road. Someone asked if I'd be taking the test on an Enfield, I'll be using a school bike I expect for the reasons mentioned about cc's. In terms of usage it would be mostly weekend riding with the odd tour. If i really love it i might do my 15 mile commute. One day I'd love to do a big tour somewhere. Good to find a really active forum. Efi might be the way to go then. I guess my other question is if there is a difference between the Bullets,Classics, Electras etc? They're essentially the same bike right? I love the sprung seat on the Classics.

Norm. You sound like a 'Glass half empty' sort of person, while others are being 'Glass half full'. Having said that. Enfields aren't the sort of bike that can be started in the morning. Ridden all day then parked in a shed overnight and repeated ad nausium. Hell. Even I understand that. I use mine as a hack. As long as I do the preventative maintenance, it keeps going and going and going. As long as a potential buyer (who isn't aware that a pair of Enfields went with Noah in his Ark) is aware of their foibles. Then everyone should be OK.

I have used my year 2000 Bullet 500 for commuting, about 16 mile round trip, and have had broken clutch cables quite a bit. Other than that, not bad. Also a cutting out problem, which wasn't the original bike's fault, but the cutout switch on the aftermarket sidestand cut out a bit too much..... Also dirt in the carb was a problem till I cleaned it out. And rain in the electrics was a problem a couple of times. I enjoy it a lot. -C

Norm, I get the impression where your live needs vehicles, to stand the harsh conditions and the distances, an air cooled engine of any kind appears to be a non starter.

Peter 50 mph max and is should be ok push above that and you will end in trouble

What a load of rubbish. Speed has nothing to do with longevity or impending doom. Excessive RPM and heat does. Clean oil and filter changes, avoid lugging, proper state of tune and ride the thing no worries. The big end and piston will be fine. Every issue I've seen has been from bad lack of proper maintenance and/or abuse by the owner. Some must just deal with abusive and neglectful owners..........

Norm, not really! I believe you have the remnants of destruction by the box load. Not denying that it has happened. Not a pretty sight. But others haven't had problems. That I believe. I haven't had issues. And that's because I maintain properly and don't abuse my machines, it is a reflection of my practices rather than luck that I have a "good one". Cheers
