I finaly got my gearbox welded and was ready to put it all together, when I did this while hammering the layshaft bearing in..
Image in other news I did get the bearing in.. back to the welder it is

No hammering required! Heat case until bush comes out with a light tap then insert frozen bush using layshaft as a mandrel. Simples! REgards, Mark

Sadly I dont have a bearing press, just some wood and a hammer I froze the bearing to death, but george the hairdryer failed me, so I had no choice but to use my fancy Jeremy Clarkson gear. I was soo looking forward to putting the gearbox back together..

Welding that up is the least of your problems, it is the threads for the detent plunger that are going to cause you problems. Hammer should have been nowhere the casing, use a longer piece of wood

I don't have a bearing press either but I usually manage with either the bench vice or some sort of lash-up with a bottle jack between two hard surfaces.
