Morning folks,

I could only get 1st and second gear on my Crusader Sports. I have dismantled the gearbox . I have a workshop manual which I find does not give sufficient detail regards the re assembly of the box. I now can not select any gears. Does any body have any suggestions where I can get a more detailed explanation for putting the gearbox back together. Or any "tricks of the trade" ?

Many thanks.

Cheers Mick

hi, I had this problem on my racer when it was first rebuilt in the 70s, if i remember correctly when you put it in second and release the gearlever the selector mechanism doesnt return to the correct position for the rachet to engage with the next gear. there should be a click as it engages. if not your still in second gear when you move the lever down. The reason it works for first and second is because your moving the lever in opposite directions but then its not centralising to engage third. to remedy you have to adjust the stop plate and or the rod. Oh, and once adjusted its given no more trouble in 40 years of racing!

Thanks Vince.

I have had another look at it, as you suggest.

I took the lay shaft off and that seemed O.K. I took the main shaft out and found that the sliding outer cover was sticking against a burr at the nearside end. I managed to get rid of the burr and the outer cover now slides without any trouble.

I put the whole lot back in and, after putting the end cover back on I was able to locate all the gears by moving the selector arm using a spanner on the square shaft. I checked the pawls and spring and they are centralising. I selected top gear and, keeping the gear lever pressed down, I put the stop plate in to abut the peg. When I tightened it up I could get nothing. When I slackened it off I got some gears. It looks like the end cover will have to come off again because when I kick it over the piston is not moving.

Being miles from any mechanics and being without a trailer is a problem.

I will persist .

Cheers Mick
