As we all probably know, it`s nearly always the fumes/gasses which cause explosions. eg. An empty petrol tank is more likely to explode than a full one, as the man demonstrated as he dropped a cigarette into a bucket of petrol and extinguished it. NO! NO! don`t try this at home.

For what it is worth here is the response from my auto trans reconditioner pal -
yes ATF will burn IF it gets on a hot enough object BUT I have NEVER seen or heard of it getting hot enough or off gassing to where it will explode. sounds like a load of b******s or he had more in there than ATF.

Beezabryan : " sounds like a load of b******s or he had more in there than ATF"
Simon : "Cork cork cork cork cork. Despite my many other travails my clutch with the cork plates is still perfect. No overheating no change whatsoever between stone cold and piping hot" - huh ????

Last primary that I know of which had exploded had just been cleaned and washed down with petrol...
The chain-case of the early twins, with a hardened face chain tensioner, were reported to explode occasionally.
And not just Enfield's either, I have seen the same happen with mid-late 50's Triumph that was having its chain-case 'flushed' (ridden) with Kero.

Perhaps I should just check with you guys before I post in case one of your mates thinks it's BS? Nothing but ATF was in that case it had not been washed out with petrol it did go bang. Believe it or not quite frankly Scarlet I don't give a damn. And the cork is perfect but don't believe that either better to spend hundreds of pounds on a replacement clutch.

If there was nothing else in there than ATF, then the Crank seal must be leaking a tad and is allowing crank-case fume through into the chaincase...
