Norm, the seller in Aus is Melva auto parts, and his price is $109 plus $82.90 post. Ebay estimates £59 plus £44.80 post. He does state it's a Borg Warner for auto and industrial use, and much stronger than stamdard. And if Mr H is listening, I won't be buying one!

This is the sprag clutch. the only thing I could see wrong with it, was one of the sprags where the gold coloured clip is was sticking and not totally free to move. There are 3 of these clips equi spaced around the O/D, I think they retain the spring that goes around the middle of the sprags.

Another view to show the clip. When everything is cleaned up, I intend to do a dry run of the starter system with the chaincase inner, sprocket, starter gear set and starter connected to make sure it works. All the gears are solid, and revolve on shafts or bearings, the starter motor gear is part of the spindle so cannot move, so the only way the starter can spin and not turn the engine sprocket is for the sprag clutch not gripping the gear. As I stated before, when I was stripping the primary side, I turned the gears by hand and the sprag worked. go figure! as our American cousins would say!

What are the internal surfaces of the sprockets like? These wear easily and result in the sprag not grabbing, especially if engine oil supply has been compomised... the sprag mechanism sits high on the cases so oil level needs maintained.

OK, if anybody wants further info on my intended purchase of a new sprag, please email me on; [email protected]. BTW, the nylock nut "holding" the clutch centre on the gearbox shaft was only just snugged up to the centre and shaft. if it had been a non Nylock one it would probably have comeaway and allowed the centre to move outwards. Check yours, my bike has only less than 4000 miles on it!

The inner and outer surfaces are good, as the bike is low mileage, and the sprag has not actually broken to cause damage.

Leon, take a deep breath, no fair thinking person could possibly justify selling these crap sprags at any price, even free they would be too expensive

Once broken, you can appreciate just how flimsy they are!!
