Finally managed to get the sprag out! Cover plate over gearset was a bugger to shift! Finally managed to move it using a rough slide hammer I made to remove baffles from Suzi T500 silencers. Hooked the end under edge of hole for starter and managed to break the grip pf the gasket.I couldn't see anything wrong with the sprag at first, and it worked just turning the gears by hand before I removed them. However, the only thing amiss that I could see, was one of the sprags was stiff to move, it seemed held by one of the three tabs that hold the spring in place on the outer ring. Anyway, I'm biting the "bullet" (sorry!) and buying a new one. Not saying where from, but looking around.

Will try to fit it in, don't want to get my new camera all oiled up! Have taken pics of gear unit split and sprag clutch, will post them later. I e mailed Hitchcocks asking who makes the sprags that they
Iist for my bike, and although they used to scource them from uk, the ones in stock are Indian ones.
I am going to a local bearing stockist tomorrow to see if I can order a Japanese NSK one, or British Renold one.
Don't know prices yet!

The Borg Warner sprag is no stronger just cheaper, doesn't matter if it is made in India or not, the design is not able to withstand the forces applied with the kickback, if you have ever heard the kickback you look down expecting the bottom of the motor to be spread all over the road, it is an horrendous noise. I assume the part number would be the same in the UK BW-SP-2 it is from a 9&1/2 inch Borg Warner 35 torque converter

Can't remmeber if I have posted this before or not, but on the French RE forum one of our friends took copious pictures when stripping the primary down to replace his broken Electra-X sprag clutch. While the alternator and chaincase fixings are different, the rest is the same. So don't worry si vous ne parlez pas francais, click here and scroll down for the pictures:

There was an Ausie guy on e bay selling a Borg Warner sprag, but he wanted £54 for it, plus, I think, £47 postand package. Only a couple quid less than H's Indian one. Looks like I'm just hoping to get one cheaper then, if they are all the same. I'll see what the bearing guys say tomorrow. Will keep you posted.

The Borg Warner sprag was about $20 AU, about 10 quid, probably wanted $54 which is about 27 quid, try at an automatic transmission rebuilder, they should be able to order one in

Come on fellas, it`s not good-form talking about cheaper parts on here, after all, this is Hitchcocks forum, they earn their living selling parts and services. If you must, contact each other by other means.
