Some very good points there Dennis that I hadn't considered. Must admit I haven't checked the output A/C wise from each set of coils to compare them. Problem at the moment is the Super Meteor isn't here at the moment, I'm trying to work out a solution before it arrives so I know what to try. I have a 4 wire stator with a Boyer on my Inter and that charges beautifully and has done so for years now, guess I could open up the loom and take some readings to see what it is actually doing. I also had a Bullet that was only putting out 17 volts A/C but was putting 13.5 volts into the battery so the 30 volts does not always have to be for some reason

There are 2 AC/DC stators: K start, 3 x 3 coils
Elect start 1 x 2 coils + 1 x 4 coils.
Both have different gauge windings...
Six of one half a dozen of the other. Hook up the Amber to one of the Violets and the Yellow to the other Violet.
Did it spark? swap the amber and yellow over. Check voltage output.
Worried about the difference in output?
Effective magnetic flux within the 6 coils remains the same but there will be a slight difference in current, but your SM wont know the difference as total wattage will be about the same, maybe a bit more, than the original lucas RM15 70 watts.
But I am a bit concerned, as the rotor for the Indian AC/DC stator wont fit inside the SM chaincase, (it is too long) so I guess you are using an RM 19 rotor? In which case the output will be less.
Also, be careful with the back of the stator that it is not making contact with the primary chain...
The ACDC stator is much wider than the RM15/19

Hi Tim, all good, the Indian rotor and 4 wire stator fit but as you say very tight. The inside of the rotor just clears the chain, can't remember if I had to modify something there or not, when I set this up originally it was 12 months ago, but ended up swapping the motor for one from an Apache so the swap over was a quick one and I must admit I put it back together fairly quickly because mate had to ride it home that night and I have only seen it a couple of times since. First I heard it wasn't charging was at the Chrissy dinner on Tuesday night. I know he has done a lot of miles on it since it was put together, said he has done 8000 miles in the last 6 months, we murder the stuff out here

Just to mention in passing there is yet another version of the AC/DC stator, the 350 K/S AVL (Machismo and Thunderbird) version which only has 5 coils for charging and lights, the 6th is a CDI coil for the sparks - frequently seen on ebay, not so common in real life outside India. A.

Adrian any idea how that works, is it using that coil as a pulse coil?

From a quick reference to the Snidal manual, it does seem to be a pulse coil. If I have read the manual correctly the CDI functions like a flywheel magneto, independently of the rest of the electrics. Hmmm.

The 350 AVL alternator isn't a direct replacement for the standard Bullet alternator, as the 350 AVL crankshaft is longer on the drive side and the keyway is actually cut for the rotor spacer (which carries the reluctor arm to trigger the CDI), and not for the alternator rotor as is standard Bullet (and lots of old Brit bikes') practice. There is a protrusion on the end of the spacer which sits in a slot in the rotor to stop everything slopping about. Not sure whether the longer main shaft is due to a thicker spacer/reluctor than on the classic Bullets or a wider rotor, but this is presumably why the AVL K/S 350s use the bulkier outer chaincase similar to the Lightning 535. A wider rotor and bigger lighting/charging coils would make sense as one of the normal coils has been sacrificed to fit the CDI coil on, but I can't verify that.

I have actually got one of these alternators to go with a rebuilt 350 Machismo crank I bought for another 500 AVL project engine. The crank has been rebalanced for a 500 piston, the crankcases are Electra-X, no messing about with a BT-H magneto for this one, as I have found something much cheaper that will do the same job!
