Thanks Scaly good advise/information but I can forget the headlight. 20amp spare will now go into the tool box along with a spare 15 amp!

On some systems, the solenoid can draw quite some current, but it is the starter motor than can scoff a battery in moments. That could justify 15 to 12 Amps all on it's own!

Never use mine, hence I forgot about it!

OK, OK, OK, A joke, so I only come on here every now and then, I`ll be fitting a digital voltmeter to my Lightning because the ammeter is a joke as well.

The ammeter, in the words of correctness, is "an indicating device only" i.e., the needle moves, but it's not exactly calibrated!

My old bullet has a lucas meter, but seems fine to let me know what wat the power is flowing.

Yep I agree the starter motor does draw a lot but as you are aware it comes straight from the battery when the solenoid closes so shouldn't affect the fusing? But like you I dont use it hearing the various story's of it self destructing I want to preserve it if possible for stalls. I also use a tip off these venerable pages and switch off the engine using the decompresser.

Workshop manual says: UK version 20 AMP. Regular version 15 AMP. US Canada
20 AMP. Take your pick.

There is a lot of that Leon! Don't get me wrong Royal Enfields are fun and I intend to keep mine there are some very well thought out ideas on them like QD rear wheels. But as I have said before they would make great Custom machines as no two seem alike! The assembler seeming to use what was available when putting them together. I suppose thats what gives them in the meaning of that misused term 'character'

My Electra X(ish) was assembled out of spare parts in a shed in Oxfordshire. (I suspect that is why both the owners manual and the workshop manual I purchased to go with it are as much use as a chocolate fireguard.)
It is also why I will be changing the oil engine oil and filter myself from now on, because I don't want the mechanic who services all of our motorcycles to have a nervous breakdown due all the conflicting instructions and advice.

Papa one of the things that annoyed me with the Electa X nanual is the pages they devoted to explaining how a battery works, I don't care how a battery works, it either works or it doesn't, get on with the really important stuff not trivial rubbish
