The trouble is Norm that there simply isn't much else it can be. The article is interesting Leon but It's an intermittent clack nothing like work timing gears which I had in the old 51 Bullet. The old bullet had a constant clatter from the timing side and the Bitsa is pretty much quiet. As you say Norm the proof will be in the installation of the parts but if it's still there afterwards I will be totally flummoxed.

Simon et al. I don't see evidence from teh photos for significant wear on the pump spindle worm.
Maybe it is rather the spindle shifting left-right as there is space for play there if the springs are weak.
I found the idler pinions had a lot of slop so that when the cam followers travel over the lobe crest, there was an instantaneous change of rotation rate and a clank from all the wear adding together. After replacing the idler bushes (simply push out/in as the pinions are iron) and adding shims to pack out the space between cam and casing much of the noise and slop has gone.
I also found that occasionally the indian steel rocker arm seem to temporarily jam in the indian pushrod cups - release giving a likely clank (although I could never distinguish it from the myriad of other noises). Replacing pushrods and rockers with our hosts best, seem to have cured that.
A third possibility is the primary chain tensioner - when the steel bolt hits the chaincase. Placing a piece of nylon tube over the bolthead cured that. Maybe none of these help you, but I learned a lot from other persons messages too so maybe someone else can.
Cheers, ChrisD.
