Ok on the suggestions of the Bullet Whisperer and Les H I had the timing cover off and checked out the oil pump spindle and worm

Clearly there is wear on the spindle and if I look carefully I can see witness marks on the top of the pinion where it is possible that the drive has been skipping the occasional tooth.

The worm on the other hand appears to be rather strangely flat topped so I am biting the Bullet (wry pun intended) and purchasing the new English made spindle and worm and up grading the pump to a higher rate one.

I will let you know if this solves the mystery clank.

No it was me that stuffed it up in the first place. Not sure why the pictures came out small as you can see I tried posting one again. Then when I tried to refresh the screen if reposted the bloody thing. Yet again an edit function would have been really useful.

Simon, it is a bit hard to see in the pics, bit of wear on the spindle, bit hard to pick the worm but I can't see this being the cause of a clank,I guess we will know when the new bits arrive
