Hi,

I've cleverly managed to lose the key for my '05 Electra X - so that's ignition, tank and panels.

A local locksmith reckons if I remove the ignition, he can strip it and get a new key to fit. Sounds good but as a new RE owner, are there any issues that I should avoid in taking it off? Any advice on its removal>

Thanks folks, Mike

You will get the ignition off no problem. Undo the nut surrounding the ignition barrel, turn the handlebars to the right, push the barrel through into the casquette so that it is free. Unplug the block connector and you are done. Buy a maplins waterproof push button to replace the barrel in the meantime. It will cost around 4 quid for the maplins button.

Try a few padlock and suitcase keys, I was very surprised to find that a key that did not resemble the real one, went in and turned!

The problem with these bikes is the fuel cap will be locked and the only way I have found is to remove the tank and take it to a locksmith to get him to open it, then you have to look at buying a new locking cap, unlees the locksmith can cut you a new key. Not sure if they can do that

Not very helpful I know in this case but if you do get a replacement key Hitchcocks sell key blanks so that you can have made a couple of copies to put away in a safe place.

It might be too late, but most vehicle keys have a code number stamped on them, you will have to supply the frame or engine number to the dealer or factory who should be able to supply you with new keys. When buying a second-hand bike , it is prudent to ask for the SPARE KEYS (and owners handbook) as most vehicles come with a spare set. My spare 2000 Bullet spare keys are still wrapped in their plastic bag.
