After dismantling the heads and barrels, I have to tell you that your diagnosis was precise - valve guides, valve stems, tappet guides, tappets are worn and the camshafts have an excessive end float. I wonder, how well the Meteor was able to run despite of that. To be continued...

Pike, the Meteors in their low state of tune seem very tolerant of all sorts of mechanical abuse and incompetence! When you get down into the details do come back for help, the fine points of valve gear, cam shimming etc are not recorded in the manuals or anywhere else as far as I know. I have found out quite a few things about these bikes when rebuilding my own so feel free to ask.
