Just going on from Norms input, a questionarises to me. If I were to need to hire a car/bike/golf trolly whatever, how would I know the tax and insurance were in place? There are all kinds of get out clauses for the nasty people of the world as well, how easy is it to get a false number plate? Answer :- About 3 minutes on this internet thingy, just tried it. Seems to me Dave's big society is heading for the wrong side of town.

If it makes sense to dispense with a paper tax disc, wouldn’t it make sense to dispense with a paper insurance document, a paper MOT certificate, and a paper receipt for the purchase of the vehicle? Most of that information is available to the Post Office as things are. Why not put it all in a ‘cloud’, as with on-line banking? Just asking, ;-)

No, A receipt is something you can shove in the filing system, whereas a tax disc is a piece of paper you have to to display on the vehicle, which colour changes every year and never seems to match my bikes colour scheme.

Point taken though, we're never going to know if a hire vehicle is taxed without asking, and (DVLAish) I expect the driver still gets fined if no tax, not the owner.

Would this scenario work ??----------- I have a bike to sell that's on SORN........I see an identical bike that is fully roadworthy--------- I "borrow" its' rear No. plate ( Those plastic screws are a doddle to break) and fit to my bike and BINGO, the buyer can now have a test drive OR with co-operation, ride it back to his place then re-fit the original and destroy the stolen one...........The police now have only one visual aid on a vehicle to initially give them some idea of its' legality...and only from behind when it comes to scanning the Reg No. of a Motorcycle..............Incidentally SCALY that 1955 Tax has only 2 months to go and in those days you WON'T get any reminder....just your collar felt !!

Alan, what we have now it this situation. Mate of mine has a Triumph shop on a busy road and out in front of his shop once a week they set up a camera facing up the road so it reads the rear number plate of all vehicles that pass, on the other side of the overpass they can pull up any vehicle that the camera has recorded something with that number plate.Unregistered vehicle, unlicensed driver, outstanding warrants, unpaid fines, they have all this information now at their fingertips so the police don't need to look at a registration label or disc, it is only the rest of us mugs that need this info and the authorities don't give a toss about us as long as THEY have their revenue stream covered
