I think the engine in mine is special due to its unusual features, principally the bottom end. It has been produced using the pre-1956 500 crankcase castings but machined for a 350 top end. -------The change to the alternator engine with the auto advance took place during 1956 at engine number G2/38101 for the 350's and my engine number is less than 100 after that. It is not a carry over from the previous model as the early 350 engine is a lot different. Also the stamps on the front of each crankcase half are in the 20's suggesting it is at the start of a batch or part of a small batch. The most obvious feature of mine is that it has no auto advance bulge on the timing cover and an oval Royal Enfield badge riveted on rather than the cast in "Royal Enfield" logo on the pre 1956 500's. If yours is a 1956 works bike I would be interested in what features it has and any engine numbers. If you email me at lakeland-ramblers(at)h0tmai1(dot)co.uk we could compare notes.
