The EFi owner’s handbook says for running-in 0 – 300 miles top speed between 35-40 mph; 300 – 600 miles 45-50 mph; 600 – 1000 miles progressive build up of speed, not holding ‘high’ speed for too long. My guess is that there are not many owners who stick to those limits! Maybe those guidelines tell us something about the way these engines are put together.

I have to say that I am extremely suspicious of those figures. At 35mph in top gear the engine is definitely labouring, which I understand is just about the worst thing you can do to a new engine.

In any case, it ought to tell you the maximum speed in each gear, and also the maximum throttle opening, if it's going to tell the whole story.

When I went for a test drive on one at Haywards in Cambridge, they told me - as it was a brand new one - to keep it below 50mph, which seems a much more reasonable limit.

Just to confirm something Presto said: I'm not interested in going really fast everywhere on the Bullet - I have a Japanese bike for that. Rather, I want to feel reassured that it's performing as well as it should, i.e. there is nothing wrong with it and it's not abnormal compared to the usual performance.

The owner’s handbook adds a bit more advice on running-in for the first 300 miles: avoid full throttle (!); stop for 10 mins every hour of running; vary the speed (I guess cover some miles at around 20-25!); avoid more than half throttle.
