Wotcha. I tried setting mine to nil clearance with the engine hot ( alloy barrel + 3mm spacer underneath ) and when it had all cooled down I had zero compression. I just live with the fact that the hotter mine gets, the louder the tappets will be. . . . .and it's still running happily.

I rode up a long steady hill yesterday and stopped for a visit to a bush at the top. When I got back to the bike I had no compression. I thought it was a valve issue but was dismayed to find I had left my pouch of spanners in the garage. Luckily it wasn't long before a guy pulled up in a convertible and had a set of spanners in his boot. I opened the tappet cover and found the inlet had seized, I managed to loosen it and readjust. The engine then fired up first time and I gently rode home before having a finer adjustment fiddle. I'm now about to take the bike out and see how it runs today. I think it was just over heating as part of running in! Lesson learnt, don't leave tools at home!

I read Gurunandans article about setting the tappets hot. In theory, yes, the tappet clearence should be set as at the working condition meaning when the engine is hot. But in reality this gives compression loss when cold... I will continue to set the clearence when the engine is cold, and then the tappets may make the noise they do. I have just re-set my tappets the no clearence. The noise was terrible at high speeds when set with a clearence, so back to normal... Jacob

Good work,JTL. It helps if you use ear plugs, never leave home without them. If it`s not the engine noise it`s the wind noise, then there are those who like loud exhaust noise. It catches up when you get older and find you are suffering hearing loss. WHAT WAS THAT YOU SAID?

Leon, you are right... just got home from a rally with the danish Royal Enfield club. Other members introduced me to ear plugs. I have never used them, but it is about time to try out this little helper. Only thing against it is that the orientation in trafic gets a little aputated. And I can't hear all the little sounds from the bike, those little sounds that will tell you when something is well or on the verge to go bad. But I will try them anyway... Jacob
