Dear venerable readers, as you are aware I am new to Enfields, "HARRYtheENFIELD" is a 500 Electra X, I have established from our host that he is fitted with a GOLD STAR exhaust, it is suggested that larger jets are needed. My question is what size, is it pilot and main, and is it a relative simple procedure to fit. Also would a 19 tooth sprocket be beneficial. Many thanks Malc (I enjoy reading all posts on this site)

Malc, why not ask our Hosts? They won't be able to give you an absolute answer because all engines vary but they should be able to give you a pretty good guess. I don't have an Electra myself and I'm sure someone else will come along soon but I seem to recall going up to 19T on the gearbox is generally regarded as about a tooth too many! I have an Electra X,which has a Haywards highway kit fitted. It copes well with an 18 tooth gearbox sprocket and is quite happy with 55-60 cruising with enough left for an overtake if need be. I am bout 16 stone and dont have to change up and down the box to keep momentum up but have my doubts that it would manage a 19 tooth sprocket. Where I live there are some fairly steep hills and most of them can be taken in top gear without stressing the motor but it wouldnt cope with a 19 tooth sprocket. I have never used a standard front sprocket so cant comment on the difference in performance but am quite happy with the way it performs now , and its returning about 94 mpg without trying

Dear all, on reflection and a quick check of my slush fund, I will wait a few weeks and purchase from our host the full monty upgrade, down pipe, carb, air filter and sprocket etc. "HARRYtheENFIELD" is still a pleasure to plod and potter around on. Thanks for suggestions. Malc

Mathematically going up to a 19t makes little difference to revs/cruising speed but with a 19t it will feel more relaxed at 60mph and you will be able to keep the lorries from your backside without stressing the motor. I've not noticed much difference in acceleration or hill climbing abilities but then I'm from the fens, not noted for it's mountainous landscape! I've no doubt though it would cope.

Hi Malc, I have an Electra XS (mechanically the same as yours). I fitted Mr H's Amal mk1 kit including exhaust blanking plug, and have fitted the freeer flowing header pipe. The silencer is standard XS, which is more open than X but probably not as open as a Goldie. My carb jetting is the same as Mr H's kit but the slide is 1/2 richer than normal to avoid 'spit-back'. I haven't gone to 19t but I am certain it would take it. I'll probably do this next time I have to open the p/chaincase. Good luck. Stephen (Cheshire)
