I read on the US forum that many people have found better behaviour using the NGK BPR6ES plug rather than the standard Bosch.

So, I looked on the Halfords web site and they definitely stock it. I leap onto the motorcycle and whizz down there. Go into the shop and ask the assistant: "Could I have an NGK BPR6ES spark plug please?"

Assistant: "What's it for?"

Me: "Well, it's for a motorbike, actually."

Assistant: "Sorry, we don't sell motorbike plugs."

Me: "But it says you sell this one on the website."

Assistant: "Sorry, I think it must be wrong, then."

Me: "Could you check for me on your computer? Like I say, the website says you've got them."

Assistant (after a pause): "Ah, yes, here they are. It's actually a lawnmower sparkplug."

Me (after a short pause): "Well, it's for a Royal Enfield, so I suppose that's about right."

Not enough training, or not enough brain cells. In any case, since when has there been "car sparkplugs", "motorcycle sparkplugs" and "lawnmower sparkplugs"? They aren't classified like that - they're classified by their size, temperature range, etc, etc. Whether it's just right for a lawnmower or for a motorcycle is a separate matter altogether.

Shop assistants! Pah!! (End of grump.)

And shops wonder why more & more people shop online. Even if I have to buy at halfords now I always order the bits I want online first and pay & pick up on way home save dealing with the lack of knowledgeable staff and you know its waiting for you.

Many years ago I was running an old Earls fork BMW and needed a battery, one of the old square, tall, rubber cased ones, 6volt. I went round to a bike shop in Sheffield and asked for a 6 volt battery of the type I needed. The "assistant" asked what bike it was for and I told him, and he said "we don`t sell BMW spares". I told him I just wanted a 6 volt battery for my bike and he repeated what he said. Needless to say I bought one elsewhere!

You have to be careful with Halfords. I've had to battle with them over things like headlight bulbs. They were stocking the same bulb in slightly different packaging in the car and bike sections respectively. The car ones for £5, the bike ones for £7. Needless say I took a car one. They tried to make me put it back saying I couldn't have it if it was going in a bike!!!

I used to work in GKN motor factors back in the 80's and the BP6ES and BPR6ES was the most popular plug of the time, sold thousands of them, if memory serves they where used in Fords and Vauxhalls of the time, used to sell them for 78p +vat for 4

Car and bike bulbs, I read an article about the cost of bulbs for boats which are even more expensive than bike bulbs and the reason given was they are manufactured to withstand more adverse conditions such as vibration, I have fitted car headlight and tail bulbs in a bike and they do not seem to last as long as proper bike ones
